Living History Farms highlights the agricultural history of the region, tracing farming practices and techniques back over 300 years. Starting with the methods used by Native Americans in the 1700s, operational farm areas of the center demonstrate the farming tools and methods of two further periods of time, the 1850s and 1900s. The Wallace Exhibit Center delves into the current state of farmers in America, and the recreated 1875 town of Walnut Hill demonstrates small-town life in the Midwest, featuring shops, like a general store and a blacksmith's shop, and historic homes. Located in the western outskirts of Urbandale, a suburb of Des Moines, the farm is about 11 miles by car from the city, set near the Campbell Recreation Area.
